About this place
Hwasu-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Jungdong-gu District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in Hwasu-dong and nearby neighborhoods of Incheon's Dong-gu. The official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists its patronal designation as the “Centenary of the Byeongin Persecution.” Rather than bearing the name of a single saint, the parish's patronal identity explicitly commemorates the history of martyrdom in the Korean Church.
The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that relics of Bishop Siméon-François Berneux and St. Anthony Kim Song-u are enshrined at Hwasu-dong Parish. This gives the church a meaning beyond its ordinary role as a local parish, connecting it directly with the memory of Korean Catholic martyrdom. While the parish today centers on Mass, the sacraments, and community life, its patronal dedication and the enshrined relics help local Catholics continue to remember and honor the faith of the martyrs.
History & origins
Hwasu-dong Parish was established during a period when the older parishes of Incheon were expanding. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, the parish was formally established in March 1962, and in September of the same year it officially received its territory from Dapdong and Songnim-dong parishes. This reflected the growth of the Catholic population in Incheon's Dong-gu and the need for more localized pastoral care.
The parish later renewed its facilities in response to the needs of its community and aging buildings. After Daegun High School moved to another area in 1998, the parish decided to use the proceeds from related property arrangements to build a new rectory, convent, and education center. Construction began in 1999, and in 2001 the rectory, convent, and education center were completed and blessed, creating a renewed base for pastoral work and parish education.
The memory of the martyrs has also remained an important part of Hwasu-dong Parish's history. Relics of Bishop Siméon-François Berneux and St. Anthony Kim Song-u are enshrined there, and the parish's patronal dedication commemorates the centenary of the Byeongin Persecution. The parish's history thus brings together the development of a local pastoral community and an enduring commitment to remembering the martyr tradition of the Korean Church.
