About this place

Haseong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gimpo District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in Haseong-myeon through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records Saint Luke as the parish’s patron. In the northern part of Gimpo, it provides a local pastoral center where Catholics can sustain their faith without having to depend entirely on more distant parishes.

Haseong did not begin immediately as a fully established parish but passed through the stage of a quasi-parish before becoming an independent parish. This background reflects a pastoral approach in which a local community is first organized according to need and then develops into a parish as its structures become more stable. Today Haseong Catholic Church continues as a parish of the Gimpo District, providing liturgical, sacramental, and educational life suited to the local community of Haseong-myeon.

History & origins

The Haseong community was established by the Diocese of Incheon as a quasi-parish on January 21, 2002. The current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records this date as the parish’s foundation date. At that stage, the purpose was to create an independent pastoral community in which local Catholics could develop a stable liturgical and sacramental life.

The Catholic Times reported that the Diocese of Incheon elevated Haseong from a quasi-parish to a full parish on February 1, 2003. About a year after the quasi-parish was established, the community gained full parish status and could continue its pastoral life within its own parish structure. This sequence illustrates a typical process in which a newly organized local Catholic community is first administered as a quasi-parish and then becomes an independent parish once its foundation is sufficiently established.

Haseong Catholic Church has since remained a parish of the Gimpo District in the Diocese of Incheon. The historically important point is not an artificially extended chronology but the fact that, in the early 2000s, pastoral needs in northern Gimpo led to the creation of a quasi-parish that soon developed into a full parish. The present community is the continuation of the local Catholic foundation formed at that time.
