About this place
The Mansu-dong community of the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs is a men's religious community officially listed by the Catholic Church in Korea as the “Monastery of St. Joseph of Silence / St. Andrew Retreat House.” As the Incheon community of a religious congregation founded within the Korean Church, it is rooted in the common life and prayer of its religious members, while the St. Andrew Retreat House in the same complex serves the faithful through retreats and spiritual formation.
According to the congregation's official information, St. Andrew Retreat House provides spaces for individuals and groups to pray, study, and make retreats, and sees contributing to the spiritual growth of the local and Korean Church as an important mission. The site is therefore best understood as both a monastery and a retreat facility. It remains a home of a religious community while also offering a setting where the faithful can step away from daily routines and focus on prayer and reflection.
History & origins
The history of the Mansu-dong community is documented separately from the general history of the congregation. According to the official chronology of the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs, the monastery of the Incheon Mansu-dong community was dedicated on September 23, 1962. This marked an important step in establishing a stable religious community in Incheon outside the congregation's motherhouse in Seoul.
The community gradually took on a role in religious formation as well as common religious life. On April 16, 1967, the novitiate of the Mansu-dong community was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by the bishop of Incheon. Mansu-dong thus became not only a local residence for members of the congregation but also a place where candidates could be formed and prepared for religious life.
As the surrounding area became increasingly urbanized, the community's mission expanded toward supporting the spiritual life of the faithful. The congregation's chronology records that the “St. Andrew Retreat House” opened at the Mansu-dong community in September 1987. Since then, the site has continued as a place of retreats and formation grounded in the prayer life of the religious community. Today the official directory lists the Monastery of St. Joseph of Silence and St. Andrew Retreat House together, showing how these two functions continue at the same location.
