About this place
Hakik-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Michuhol District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in Hakik-dong and nearby neighborhoods of Michuhol-gu through the liturgy, the sacraments, and faith formation. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Hakik-dong as a parish of the Michuhol District. It functions as an independent local parish where Catholics can celebrate Mass, receive catechesis, and build community within their own living area.
The parish did not begin with a conventional purpose-built church. It first used commercial space and later settled by adapting an existing local building for use as a church. This development of the physical space reflects the way a new parish gradually created the worship and community facilities it needed within the neighborhood. Today Hakik-dong Catholic Church continues as the local parish that emerged from that process and is embedded in the everyday life of Michuhol-gu.
History & origins
Hakik-dong Parish was established on January 14, 2008, by dividing territory previously belonging to Yonghyeon-dong and Juan3-dong parishes. The Digital Encyclopedia of Michuhol-gu records that the first community was led by Father Andrew Kim Min-jung and that its first location was on the fifth floor of Seongsim Plaza at 533-3 Hakik 1-dong. Before it had a separate church building, the new parish began its liturgical and community life in this commercial space.
The parish later moved to and settled at its present site in Hakik-dong. The current location was within a redevelopment area, and an existing factory building was remodeled for use as the church. Rather than beginning with a newly constructed church, the community adapted an existing building to its pastoral needs, a distinctive feature of Hakik-dong Parish’s development.
The current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Hakik-dong as a parish of the Michuhol District in the Diocese of Incheon. The movement from temporary commercial space to the conversion of an existing building and eventual establishment as a local parish illustrates one way the Church responded to new pastoral needs in the Michuhol area in the 2000s. The history of Hakik-dong Catholic Church is therefore a story of parish creation and the gradual securing and adaptation of space in which the community could take root.
