About this place

Hajeom Catholic Church is a parish of the Ganghwa District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in Hajeom-myeon in northern Ganghwa through the liturgy and the sacraments. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Hajeom among the parishes of the Ganghwa District. Because it stands in a rural area that also connects with life on the islands near the northern maritime border, the parish’s role has extended beyond worship within the church building to linking Catholic communities spread across a wider area.

Hajeom Parish has been especially connected with pastoral care for the Gyodong mission station. Gyodong is a small Catholic community on a border island in the West Sea, and through Hajeom Parish it has remained connected with priestly ministry and the wider diocesan Church. This relationship shows Hajeom not only as a local parish for northern Ganghwa but also as a pastoral link supporting an island mission community.

History & origins

Hajeom Parish began on January 20, 2003, as one of several new parishes established by the Diocese of Incheon. At that time the diocese also created parishes such as Cheonghak-dong, Eunhaeng-dong, Beombak-dong, and Sang2-dong and reorganized their pastoral territories. For northern Ganghwa, the establishment of Hajeom marked the creation of an independent parish base for local ministry.

After the parish was established, Hajeom became closely connected with pastoral care for the Gyodong mission station. Maryknoll missionary Father Robert R. Pellini continued serving beyond normal retirement age and, beginning in 2005, ministered at Gyodong mission station under Hajeom Parish. This period, in which a mainland parish and an island mission station were linked through sustained priestly ministry, shows that Hajeom’s history extended beyond the main island of Ganghwa.

Father Pellini celebrated his final Mass at Gyodong mission station on April 30, 2024, and a farewell Mass at Hajeom Catholic Church on May 5 before concluding sixty-four years of missionary service in Korea. These records show that, after its establishment, Hajeom Parish served not only local Catholics but also as a pastoral base connecting the smaller Catholic community of Gyodong with the diocese. Its history thus runs from the creation of the parish in 2003 into an enduring pastoral relationship linking northern Ganghwa with an island mission community.
