About this place
Haean Catholic Church is a parish of the Jungdong-gu District in the Diocese of Incheon, located near Incheon's historic open port and Chinatown. The official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Our Lady of Lourdes as the parish patron. Today it serves the local faithful through Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life, while also standing at a place where the multicultural history of old Incheon intersects with the modern history of Korean Catholicism.
The parish's identity is also closely connected with the nearby Jemuljin Martyrs' Shrine, one of the principal places in Incheon that preserves the memory of Catholic martyrdom and a site often visited together with Haean Church. Because Haean began with pastoral care for the Chinese community and later developed into a territorial parish, it preserves a distinctive memory of ministry to migrants alongside the continuing life of a local Catholic community.
History & origins
The origins of Haean Parish lie in the Chinese Catholic community of Incheon's Chinatown. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea and records related to the parish's fiftieth-anniversary history state that the community was established in 1960 as a church for Chinese Catholics. At the time, Chinese believers were practicing their faith in a linguistic and cultural environment different from their own, and the establishment of a dedicated pastoral community marked the beginning of the Seonlin Chinese Parish.
The early parish centered on the Chinese community, but its role changed as the population and Catholic makeup of old Incheon changed. In 1972 it received territory from Dapdong and Hwasu-dong parishes, strengthening its function for Korean Catholics. Under the name Haean Parish, it passed through a period as a joint Korean-Chinese community and gradually became established as a local territorial parish.
This transformation was more than a change of name. It reflected shifts in population and pastoral needs in the open-port district of Incheon. A community that began to serve Chinese Catholics continued as a Korean territorial parish, leaving Haean as an example in Incheon's Catholic history where ministry to migrants and ordinary local parish ministry developed in succession at the same place. Its later connection with the nearby Jemuljin Martyrs' Shrine added a further role in preserving the memory of martyr faith in the old port area.
