About this place
Gwanchang-dong Mission Station belongs to Baengnyeongdo Parish in the Diocese of Incheon and serves the Catholic community of the Gwanchang area on Baengnyeong Island. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea identifies Baengnyeongdo as its mother parish, and Gwanchang-dong remains one of the mission stations still present across the island.
Baengnyeongdo has a distinctive Catholic structure in which one parish church and multiple village mission stations together sustain island faith life. Gwanchang-dong provides a nearby place where Catholics living away from the parish church can gather for prayer and maintain community ties. Together with the island's other mission stations, it forms part of the Catholic landscape of Baengnyeongdo and shows visitors the importance of village-level Catholic communities outside the model of a large urban parish.
History & origins
Public Catholic sources do not provide an exact individual foundation date for Gwanchang-dong Mission Station, but the historical setting in which the mission stations of Baengnyeongdo developed is relatively clear. Catholic Peace Broadcasting reports that, through the energetic pastoral work of the island's first pastor, Fr. Bu Yeong-bal, a number of mission stations were created around 1960 in villages across the island.
During this period Catholics living far from the parish church organized their faith life around village mission stations. Gwanchang-dong is listed among the ten mission stations that remain today, together with communities such as Sagot, Dumujin, and Gaeul-ri, forming a network across Baengnyeongdo. Because the available sources do not specify a separate first construction date or founder for Gwanchang-dong itself, those details should not be asserted.
Although the island's population and number of Catholics later changed, Gwanchang-dong remained a mission station of Baengnyeongdo Parish. Its history is best understood within the broader island tradition of mission-station-centered Catholic life that grew out of intensive evangelization and village community formation around the 1960s, rather than as a simple chronology of one building.
