About this place
Guwol 1-dong Parish belongs to the Namdong District of the Diocese of Incheon and serves Catholics in the Guwol-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its patron is St. William, and the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters participate in the parish apostolate. In a residential district shaped by large apartment developments, the parish gives local Catholics a nearby center for liturgy and faith life.
The parish is distinctive because it was separated from an existing parish in response to the creation of new apartment complexes and rapid population growth. It initially used rented commercial space as a temporary church, but later built a permanent parish church and established a stable pastoral base. Guwol 1-dong Parish therefore shows how a Catholic community took root in a new residential district during the urban expansion of Incheon.
History & origins
The Guwol area originally belonged to Ganseok-dong Parish, but its population grew rapidly after the development of large public apartment complexes. A new pastoral center was needed for Catholics in the emerging residential district, and Guwol 1-dong Parish was established on February 16, 1982, after separation from Ganseok-dong Parish. At first, the parish rented rooms on the third floor of the Guwol General Shopping Center as a temporary church, while the rectory was located in an apartment.
In September of the same year, a community of Olivetan Benedictine Sisters was opened to assist the parish. As the community became established, plans for a permanent church advanced, and construction began at the present site on April 22, 1984. The rapid transition from a rented shopping-center chapel to a permanent church reflected both the growth of Guwol-dong and the increasing number of Catholics.
The church building was completed in December 1984 and dedicated on February 9, 1985. With a stable liturgical and pastoral center, Guwol 1-dong Parish continued to develop within the new residential district.
The parish's history is a clear example of a new Catholic community emerging alongside urban development. Its separation from an older parish, its temporary beginning in commercial space, the construction of a permanent church, and the participation of a religious community show how the Church responded to changing residential patterns in Incheon during the 1980s.
