About this place

Gogang-dong Parish belongs to the Bucheon 2 District of the Diocese of Incheon and serves Catholics in the Gogang-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life. Its patron is St. Joseph, and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae participate in the parish apostolate. In an urban district near the boundary between southwestern Seoul and the Diocese of Incheon, the parish provides a local place where Catholics can continue liturgical, catechetical, and devotional life.

The parish was established during a period when population growth in Bucheon led to the creation of several new Catholic parishes. Today it continues to serve both established neighborhoods and changing residential areas. Its significance lies less in a single architectural feature than in the formation of an independent Catholic community that has sustained the everyday faith life of believers in the northern Bucheon area.

History & origins

Gogang-dong Parish emerged during the rapid population growth and expansion of Catholic communities in Bucheon during the 1980s. Existing parishes had increasingly broad territories, and new parishes were created in several residential districts. Gogang-dong likewise developed into an area that required its own pastoral community.

The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records March 4, 1989, as the establishment date of Gogang-dong Parish. The new parish was separated from Yeowol-dong Parish and placed under the patronage of St. Joseph. With an independent parish, Catholics in Gogang-dong gained a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities rather than having to rely entirely on a neighboring parish.

The Digital Encyclopedia of Bucheon notes that several Catholic parishes, including Gogang-dong, appeared in the late 1980s as the city expanded. The history of Gogang-dong Parish is therefore part of a broader reorganization in which large parish territories were divided and new pastoral centers were created for distinct residential communities across Bucheon.
