About this place
This is the Bucheon Community of the Claretian Missionaries, formally the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists it as a male religious community within the Diocese of Incheon, while the congregation’s own Korean site identifies the Claret Migrant Center at the same location. It is therefore best understood not as a territorial parish but as a religious house from which Claretians live in community and carry out a specialized apostolate.
A distinctive feature of the Bucheon Community is its pastoral accompaniment of migrants. Here the missionary charism of the Claretians meets the multicultural and migrant reality of contemporary Korea, linking evangelization with the lives and community formation of migrants rather than confining it to the monastery itself. For visitors, the significance of the place lies less in the building alone than in the continuing combination of Claretian community life and migrant ministry at one site.
History & origins
The Claretian Missionaries were founded on 16 July 1849 in Vic, Spain, by Father Antonio María Claret and five fellow priests. The congregation’s official history explains that Claret’s experience of itinerant preaching, his awareness of the urgent need for evangelization, and the need for a prepared community of missionaries who could share that mission formed the background to the foundation.
The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the congregation’s entry into Korea in September 1982. Communities formed in Korea gradually developed a variety of apostolates responding to parish, missionary, spiritual, and social needs, and in Bucheon this missionary spirit took concrete form in ministry with migrants.
The Claret Migrant Center at the present address was blessed on 9 November 2018 in a rite presided over by Bishop John Baptist Jung Shin-chul of Incheon. The congregation’s own record explicitly describes it as a space for migrants and gives the same address at 47 Simgok-ro. The present Bucheon Community thus continues as a concrete expression of the congregation’s wider missionary tradition meeting the realities of migration in Korean society.
