About this place

Geomdan-dong Parish is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon serving Catholics in the rapidly developing Geomdan area of northwestern Incheon. Its patron is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and the parish gathers believers around Mass and the sacraments while connecting Catholic families in newly formed residential districts. Both the diocesan parish guide and the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea confirm its status as an independent parish.

The present parish did not begin at its current site. It first used an existing mission-station facility as the base for the new community before moving to a newly built church. For this reason, Geomdan-dong Parish reflects a transition from the older rural mission-station pattern to a parish shaped by urban growth. Visitors can understand it as a local Catholic community formed in response to the demographic and residential changes of the Geomdan area.

History & origins

Geomdan-dong Parish was established on July 18, 2000, when it was separated from Oryu-dong Parish in response to population growth and new pastoral needs in the Geomdan area. Because a new church had not yet been built, the parish initially used the former Geumgok Mission Station building. The fact that a mission-station building became the first base of the independent parish illustrates continuity within the local Catholic community.

After its establishment, the parish worked to secure a permanent church. In July 2002 it moved to the present site after constructing a new church there. The church was dedicated in March 2003, giving the growing community a stable center for liturgy and pastoral activity. The rapid move from a mission-station facility to a new parish church reflected the fast urban development and expansion of the Catholic population in Geomdan.

As the local population continued to grow, Majeon-dong Parish was separated from Geomdan-dong Parish in December 2004. Parish boundaries were consequently adjusted, and Geomdan-dong reorganized its pastoral structure within the newly divided residential area. The sequence of parish foundation, church construction, and the later creation of another parish shows how the Catholic community was reorganized alongside the urbanization of Geomdan.
