About this place
Geomam-dong Parish belongs to the Diocese of Incheon and serves the Catholic community of Geomam-dong and nearby areas through Mass, the sacraments, and parish life. Its patron is St. Anthony Mary Claret, and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae currently take part in the parish apostolate. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Geomam-dong as an independent parish, and today it continues the ordinary faith life of Catholics in the residential districts of northwestern Incheon.
A distinctive feature of the parish is that it continues a local community formerly known as Seogot. An older mission-station community developed into an independent parish and, through urban development and demographic change, eventually became established at the present Geomam-dong church. The parish can therefore be understood both as a community serving a newer urban district and as an heir to the older mission-station tradition of the western Incheon area.
History & origins
The roots of Geomam-dong Parish reach back to Seogot Mission Station, which began in 1943 under Dapdong Parish. Catholics living in northwestern Incheon, far from their parish church, maintained prayer and liturgical life around this local mission community. As the population and Catholic community grew, the mission station became the foundation for a separate pastoral community.
The community was elevated to parish status on February 1, 1987. Urbanization then accelerated in Geomam-dong and the surrounding area, creating the need for a larger and more permanent parish church. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records this date as the establishment of the present parish and identifies St. Anthony Mary Claret as its patron.
A new church was eventually built in Geomam-dong and dedicated on November 28, 2004, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san. Catholic Times described the new complex as a three-story building with one basement level, including the main church, a smaller chapel, rectory, convent, and other parish facilities. The movement from mission station to parish and then to a new church reflects the way urban change and Catholic growth developed together in the Geomam area.
