About this place
The Gabgot Martyrs’ Shrine 50th Anniversary Spiritual Center is a retreat and prayer facility located within the same complex as Gabgot Martyrs’ Shrine in the Diocese of Incheon. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea registers it as a diocesan retreat and prayer house. It connects the memory of martyrdom preserved at the shrine with a setting in which pilgrims can remain for reflection, formation, and retreat.
The center was developed as a comprehensive spiritual facility with accommodation, lecture and seminar spaces, and a church for group retreats and education. The memory of the three Catholics martyred at Gabgot is reflected in the names and organization of the buildings. It is therefore more than lodging for visitors: it extends the shrine’s history and spirituality into education and contemplation, helping pilgrims deepen their experience of the holy place.
History & origins
The Diocese of Incheon developed the spiritual center beside Gabgot Martyrs’ Shrine as one of the projects commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the diocese. According to the Catholic Times and Catholic GoodNews, construction began on September 28, 2011, and the complex received approval for use on November 20, 2012. The project was intended to extend pilgrimage beyond a short visit by providing a setting for retreats and formation.
The center consists of three buildings with one basement level and three floors above ground. The buildings were named after Park Sang-son, Woo Yun-jip, and Choi Sun-bok, the three Catholics martyred at Gabgot, and were equipped with a church, lecture and seminar rooms, a library, accommodations, and other spaces needed for retreats and education. In this way, the architecture itself incorporates the memory of the martyrs.
On December 8, 2013, a blessing Mass was celebrated for the 50th Anniversary Spiritual Center and its church. The commemorative construction project thus became an established ecclesial center for spirituality, closely linking the pilgrimage function of Gabgot Martyrs’ Shrine with retreat and formation.
After the center was created, the memory of Gabgot came to be experienced not only through the historical site and memorials but also through residential retreats, education, and communal prayer. The center therefore serves not merely as an auxiliary facility but as a place where the faith of the martyrs is connected with contemporary spiritual life.
