About this place
Ganseok 4-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Namdong district of the Diocese of Incheon and forms an independent Catholic community in the Ganseok-dong area. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint John the Baptist as its patron and continues to register the community as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon.
The site functions as the center of a parish, not merely as a church building. Although its name resembles that of nearby Ganseok 2-dong Parish, the two are independent parishes with distinct histories and pastoral territories. Catholics of Ganseok 4-dong gather around the parish for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
History & origins
Ganseok 4-dong Parish was established on May 31, 1978, by separating territories from Ganseok-dong Parish, Juan 1-dong Parish, and Bupyeong 2-dong Parish. The current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia agree on this date. The parish was originally called Juwon Parish, reflecting the creation of a new pastoral community in an area where several existing parish boundaries met.
The territory of Juwon Parish was later adjusted as the surrounding city continued to grow. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Sipjeong-dong Parish, rapid growth in the Catholic population led the diocese to establish another parish, and Sipjeong-dong Parish was separated from Juwon on September 1, 1983. This shows how the Ganseok area’s parish structure became increasingly localized as the community expanded.
In January 1993, a diocesan naming revision aligned parish names more closely with their locations, and Juwon Parish became Ganseok 4-dong Parish. The present name therefore belongs to the continuing history of the community founded in 1978 rather than marking the creation of a new parish.
