About this place
Ganseok 2-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Namdong district of the Diocese of Incheon and serves the sacramental and communal life of Catholics in the Ganseok-dong area. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea gives “the Resurrection of Jesus” as the parish’s patronal title and continues to register it as an independent parish community.
The parish church is more than a place where Sunday and weekday Masses are celebrated. It is a local pastoral center for Baptism, the Eucharist, catechesis, fellowship, and the continuing life of the Catholic community. The present name Ganseok 2-dong distinguishes it from other parishes in the wider Ganseok area and represents one branch of the Catholic community historically formed there.
History & origins
Ganseok 2-dong Parish began on November 1, 1974. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that the Ganseok-dong area was separated from Juan 1-dong Parish to form a new parish, and the current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea gives the same date of establishment. The original name was Ganseok-dong Parish, created as an independent pastoral unit in response to the growth of the local Catholic community.
As the parish grew, the church structure of the wider Ganseok area was divided further. In 1978, Mansu-dong Parish was separated and established from the territory then served by Ganseok-dong Parish, while another parish was also formed in the Ganseok 4-dong area. This marked a transition from one parish serving a broad district to a network of more locally defined parishes.
In January 1993, a diocesan naming adjustment based on parish location changed the name from Ganseok-dong Parish to Ganseok 2-dong Parish. The present name therefore reflects an administrative and pastoral clarification rather than the creation of a completely new community.
