About this place
Gajwa-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as the center of liturgical and sacramental life for Catholics in the Gajwa-dong area of Incheon. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint Jude Thaddeus as its patron and continues to register Gajwa-dong as an independent parish of the diocese.
A parish is more than a building used for worship: it is the pastoral community in which Baptism, the Eucharist, catechesis, fellowship, and service are carried out. The current directory lists no mission stations under the parish, showing a structure in which Catholics of the local area gather directly around the parish church.
History & origins
Gajwa-dong Parish emerged from Seoknam-dong Parish as the Catholic population of the western Incheon area grew. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Seoknam-dong Parish, Gajwa-dong first existed as a mission station under Seoknam-dong and was elevated to an independent parish on August 15, 1984. The current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the same date, so the principal chronology is consistent across the sources.
At the time of the elevation, the records of 241 households and 692 Catholics were transferred from Seoknam-dong to the new Gajwa-dong Parish. This indicates that the creation of the parish was not simply the construction of a new church building, but the formal independence of an already existing local Catholic community as its own pastoral unit.
Gajwa-dong subsequently became established as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon under the patronage of Saint Jude Thaddeus. Its development from mission station to parish illustrates the broader process by which parish structures in western Incheon were subdivided during the 1980s in response to urban growth and an increasing Catholic population.
