About this place

The Gajeong-dong House of Prayer is a spiritual facility operated by the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and centered on one-day retreats. According to the congregation’s official information, it includes a main chapel, a large hall, dining facilities, an outdoor Way of the Cross, and a garden, and it provides space for groups to conduct their own retreats. It is therefore best understood not as a parish church but as a retreat facility through which the religious congregation supports prayer and spiritual renewal.

Its mode of use focuses less on long residential retreats and more on spending a day in prayer and reflection as a community. The chapel, Way of the Cross, and garden support liturgy, meditation, and silence, making the house one form of the congregation’s apostolate for helping the faithful step away briefly from daily life and revisit their life of faith.

History & origins

The history of the Gajeong-dong House of Prayer can be traced to the prayer and formation space established by the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Incheon during the 1970s. The congregation’s official chronology records that on October 24, 1974, a memorial church dedicated to Bishop Francis Borgia Hong Yong-ho and a house of prayer were completed in Gajeong-dong, Incheon. This record marks the point at which the present house emerged as a distinct local center within the wider history of the congregation.

Public use did not begin immediately with the completion of the building. The same official chronology states that the house of prayer opened on July 5, 1975. The completion in 1974 and the opening in 1975 should therefore be understood as two stages: first, the establishment of the physical and sacred space, and then its beginning as a retreat and prayer facility used by the faithful.

The site has continued within the congregation’s retreat apostolate and today remains a place for one-day and self-directed group retreats. The continuity between the early designation “house of prayer” and its present function shows how the congregation has long provided urban Catholics with a dedicated setting for prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
