About this place

Dongchun-dong Catholic Church is the church of Dongchun-dong Parish in the Yeonsu district of the Diocese of Incheon. Catholics from Dongchun-dong and the surrounding residential area gather here around Mass and the sacraments and sustain their parish community. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the parish as established in 1995 and names Mary, Queen of Peace, as its patron. It has become a local center for liturgy, formation, and fellowship in Yeonsu, an area shaped by new residential development.

The present church complex includes a broad courtyard and several ancillary spaces and was designed not only for liturgy but also for meetings, education, and interaction with the surrounding community. After the new church was dedicated in 2012, it received the grand prize in the Incheon Architecture Awards that same year. Its deeper significance, however, lies not in the award itself but in the fact that a community that spent many years in temporary worship spaces eventually created an open parish environment where both parishioners and local residents can gather and remain.

History & origins

Dongchun-dong Parish was established on February 6, 1995, when it separated from Yeonsu Parish. Residential development and growth in the Catholic population of Yeonsu-gu led the diocese to divide the older parish territory so that a local community could sustain liturgical and pastoral life closer to where its members lived. The new parish did not immediately have a completed church of its own and spent many years celebrating Mass in temporary and prefabricated structures while the community developed.

Securing a permanent church became a long-term parish project. Catholic press accounts report that after roughly seventeen years in temporary worship spaces, the community completed a new church and celebrated its dedication on May 13, 2012, with Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san of Incheon presiding. The complex brought together the main church, a convent, and ancillary buildings containing offices and meeting spaces.

The architecture was conceived not only for internal parish functions but also for a relationship with the surrounding neighborhood. A broad lawn, central courtyard, and spaces accessible to local residents were praised for opening the church toward the community. Later that year the complex received the grand prize in the Incheon Architecture Awards, recognizing both its religious symbolism and its open spatial design. The parish's history thus runs from its 1995 separation, through a long period of temporary worship, to the creation in 2012 of a permanent church intended to hold both parish community life and engagement with the neighborhood.
