About this place

Dochang-dong Catholic Church is the church of Dochang-dong Parish in the Siheung-Ansan district of the Diocese of Incheon. It is where Catholics from Dochang-dong and nearby areas of Siheung gather around Mass and the sacraments and sustain parish life. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Dochang-dong as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon established in 1999. In northern Siheung, where residential development and rural communities have long existed side by side, it provides a nearby center for liturgy, catechesis, and fellowship.

Dochang-dong has a different character from an old shrine or a large pilgrimage center. It was formed as a local parish separated from an older parish in response to changing residential patterns and growth in the Catholic population. Its significance lies in enabling Catholics to practice their faith consistently within their ordinary living area. The church is therefore best understood not as a monument to a single historic event but as a place of everyday faith showing how a parish community forms and continues at the meeting point of urban and rural life.

History & origins

Before becoming an independent parish, the Dochang-dong area belonged to the pastoral territory of Sincheon Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Sincheon Parish records that, as development and the Catholic population continued to grow, Dochang-dong Parish was separated in February 1999 and 285 households with 791 registered Catholics were transferred to the new community. The current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea gives February 9, 1999, as the parish's establishment date.

Sincheon Parish had already given rise to Daeya-dong Parish in 1992 and Podong Parish in 1995. The creation of Dochang-dong was therefore another stage in a continuing reorganization of pastoral boundaries, responding to population growth and residential change in the Siheung area by bringing liturgy and sacramental life closer to local communities.

After becoming an independent parish, the Dochang-dong community continued its pastoral life around its own parish church. Public sources reviewed here do not provide a sufficiently reliable chronology of the first church building's construction and dedication, so those details are not added. The clearly documented historical significance lies in the community's separation from the broad territory of Sincheon Parish and its formation as an independent parish corresponding more closely to the local living area.
