Dapdong Cathedral

History & origins

Dapdong Parish was founded in 1889 around the Catholic community of the open port of Jemulpo. The first missionary pastor, Father Nicolas-Joseph Wilhelm, acquired land on the present Dapdong hill the following year. His successor, Father Le Viel, built a temporary church in 1891, giving the community a stable place for liturgy. Father Maraval later carried forward the construction of a permanent church in the mid-1890s, and the completed building was consecrated by Bishop Gustave Mutel on July 4, 1897. Sources differ on the exact month and day assigned to the parish's foundation, so this account uses only the year 1889, on which the sources agree.

As the number of Catholics increased, the original church eventually required major expansion. During Father Eugène Deneux's period, a large reconstruction project in the 1930s extended the building around the existing structure. The church in its present form was completed and dedicated in 1937. This work created a distinctive architectural layering in which the earlier church remained embedded within a larger exterior and expanded interior.

When the Apostolic Vicariate of Incheon, predecessor of the present diocese, was established in 1961, Dapdong became its cathedral. It continued to serve as the center of diocesan life in Incheon, and its architectural and historical significance was formally recognized when it was designated a national Historic Site on September 25, 1981. Its trajectory from a mission center in the open-port era to a cathedral and protected heritage site makes Dapdong a place where the growth of the Catholic Church in Incheon and the modern history of the city can be read together.
