About this place

Daegot Catholic Church is the church of Daegot Parish in the Gimpo district of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as the liturgical and pastoral center for Catholics in Daegot-myeon, Gimpo. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Daegot as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon. In an area where rural communities and industrial development coexist, the parish church provides a local base for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Although Daegot is a relatively recent independent parish, its significance is best understood within the diocese's effort to organize pastoral territories according to changing residential patterns in the wider Gimpo area. The parish church allows local Catholics to sustain sacramental and communal life closer to where they live rather than relying only on a more distant mother parish. Daegot is therefore primarily an everyday place of faith where the local identity of Daegot-myeon and Catholic parish life meet.

History & origins

Daegot Parish was established as pastoral territories in the Gimpo area were being subdivided, separating from Yanggok Parish. Effective December 5, 2005, the Diocese of Incheon created Daegot Parish and assigned to it several villages in Daegot-myeon, including Yulsaeng-ri, Chowonji-ri, and Daeneung-ri. The change organized the local Catholic community as an independent parish in response to the expanding residential and social geography of western Gimpo and the need for more accessible pastoral care.

Before the parish was established, Catholics in the Daegot area belonged pastorally to Yanggok Parish. With the 2005 reorganization they began life as a separate parish community. Public official and Catholic press sources do not provide a sufficiently verified date for any earlier mission station or a detailed chronology of the first church building, so those points are not inferred here.

The clearly documented turning point is therefore the separation and establishment of the parish in 2005. From that point, the Daegot community had an institutional base for its own liturgy, catechesis, and local pastoral life. The history of Daegot Catholic Church is significant less for the continuity of an old building than for the formation of a new local parish as the Gimpo region grew and diocesan pastoral boundaries were reorganized.
