About this place

Cheongsu Catholic Church is a parish of the Gimpo district in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in and around Janggi-dong through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea identifies the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as its patron, and the parish community developed amid the growth of the Gimpo Hangang new town and surrounding neighborhoods.

The present church includes the main worship space as well as rooms for catechesis, meetings, pastoral activities, and prayer. In a part of Gimpo whose living environment changed greatly through new-town development, Cheongsu Parish has helped newly settled families build a stable life of faith within a parish community. Its dedication to the Holy Family also resonates naturally with the family-centered character of a rapidly growing residential area.

History & origins

Cheongsu Parish was established in January 2002 after separating from Gimpo Parish in response to population growth and changing residential patterns in the Gimpo area. After its establishment, the community celebrated Mass in temporary facilities while it worked toward having a permanent church of its own. As development of the Gimpo Hangang new town accelerated, the parish’s surroundings changed substantially, and in 2007 the community moved to its present site in Janggi-dong to prepare for a new church.

Parishioners spent many years preparing for construction, and work on the new church began in 2013. The building was completed the following year and was designed with a church, catechetical rooms, multipurpose spaces, clergy and sisters’ residences, a Marian garden, and Stations of the Cross. Because the community had spent a long period worshipping in temporary facilities, the new church represented an important stage of stable settlement for the parish.

In July 2015, the new church was dedicated in a Mass presided over by Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san of Incheon. The history of Cheongsu Parish thus follows the development of Gimpo’s new-town area: separation from an older parish, relocation into a changing residential zone, and the construction of a permanent church. It is an example of parish pastoral infrastructure expanding together with urban growth.
