About this place
Cheongna Catholic Church is a parish of the West Sea district in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in and around Cheongna International City through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. It is listed as an independent parish in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea and functions as a local center of Catholic life in a new-city environment that has continued to receive new households and generations of residents.
As the Cheongna area developed, the parish also served as a mother community that received new Catholics and established a pastoral base for the growing district. The later separation of the Cheongna 3-dong community into its own parish shows how Catholic pastoral structures in the area became more localized as the city expanded. Today Cheongna Parish continues to support the faith life of its local community while also standing as an important link in the growth of newer Catholic communities in the new town.
History & origins
As Cheongna International City was developed and new residential districts grew rapidly, the Diocese of Incheon established a parish to serve the area independently. A diocesan clergy appointment announced at the end of 2010 explicitly listed “Cheongna (newly established),” and the new parish began its pastoral life in January 2011. This was a diocesan response to the growth of Catholics in the new city by creating a parish community within Cheongna itself rather than relying only on neighboring established parishes.
As the population of Cheongna International City continued to increase, the parish territory was divided again. On August 27, 2018, Cheongna 3-dong Parish was established after separating from Cheongna Parish. The history of Cheongna Parish thus reflects the growth of a local church alongside the formation and population expansion of a new city, eventually becoming a mother parish from which another parish emerged.
Cheongna Catholic Church continues today as an independent parish of the Diocese of Incheon. Its development from a newly established parish to a community that later gave rise to another parish is a clear example of how Catholic pastoral structures expanded together with the urban transformation of the Cheongna area.
