About this place
Cheonghak-dong Catholic Church is a territorial parish of the Yeonsu district in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in Cheonghak-dong and nearby areas through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and small-community activities. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea identifies the Holy Family as the parish patron, and the church serves as a local community where families and generations share parish life within the older urban area of Yeonsu-gu.
Cheongeon Catholic Church, a personal parish for Deaf Catholics, is also located in Cheonghak-dong, but Cheonghak-dong Parish has a different character: it is an ordinary territorial parish serving Catholics within its assigned local area rather than a particular group of faithful. The coexistence of these two nearby communities with distinct pastoral purposes is an important distinction for visitors. Cheonghak-dong Parish functions as the principal center for the ordinary parish life of local residents.
History & origins
Before an independent parish was established in Cheonghak-dong, the area was served by neighboring parishes. When Songdo Parish was established in 1981, Cheonghak-dong was placed under its pastoral care together with Okryeon-dong and Dongchun-dong. As residential development in Yeonsu-gu expanded and the Catholic community grew, the need for a separate parish in Cheonghak-dong increased.
The Diocese of Incheon announced the establishment of Cheonghak-dong Parish at the end of December 2002, and the parish formally began on January 20, 2003. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records the same date as its establishment. The new parish took the Holy Family as its patron and gradually formed a community centered on Catholics living in the Cheonghak-dong area.
Parish boundaries were later adjusted as administrative districts and patterns of daily life changed. In 2012, the Diocese of Incheon reorganized the boundaries of parishes in the Yeonsu area, including Cheonghak-dong, Seonhak-dong, and Okryeon-dong, and assigned parts of Yeonsu 1-dong and Okryeon-dong to Cheonghak-dong Parish. This history shows that the parish has developed as a territorial community whose pastoral boundaries have been adapted to the changing urban geography of Yeonsu-gu.
