About this place

Cheongeon Catholic Church is a personal parish established by the Diocese of Incheon for Deaf Catholics and was the first Catholic parish in Korea created specifically for Deaf pastoral ministry. Unlike an ordinary territorial parish, which serves Catholics within a defined geographic area, Cheongeon Parish is organized around a particular community of faithful so that Deaf Catholics can participate in Mass, the sacraments, and parish life through Korean Sign Language.

Today the parish offers signed Masses and confessions as well as retreats, pilgrimages, catechesis, and faith formation for Deaf Catholics. The Incheon Catholic Deaf Mission also uses the same site and supports transportation and community activities for Deaf parishioners. Cheongeon is therefore more than a church that provides sign-language interpretation; it is a pastoral community created so that Deaf Catholics can live fully as members of the Church within their own language and culture.

History & origins

The roots of Cheongeon Parish lie in the long ministry of the Incheon Catholic Deaf Mission. Father An Gyu-tae, who became the first pastor, had served as spiritual director of the mission for about ten years before the parish was established, while Deaf Catholics had long hoped for a stable place where they could gather after Mass and sustain their faith life. As the Diocese of Incheon prepared for its fiftieth anniversary, it adopted this need as one of its diocesan commemorative projects.

On December 28, 2010, Auxiliary Bishop John Baptist Jung Shin-chul presided over the blessing of the site and the groundbreaking ceremony in Cheonghak-dong. In January 2011, Cheongeon Parish was formally established, becoming the first Catholic parish in Korea for Deaf Catholics and the first personal parish in the Diocese of Incheon. Its community was organized around the pastoral needs of Deaf Catholics rather than around ordinary territorial boundaries.

The new church was dedicated on June 3, 2011, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san of Incheon. In addition to the worship space, the building provided rooms for education and community activities, creating a stable base for signed Masses, the sacraments, and catechesis. Since then, Cheongeon Parish has continued the founding purpose through retreats, pilgrimages, faith formation, and service for Deaf Catholics.
