About this place

Bupyeong 3-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Bupyeong District in the Diocese of Incheon. Although its current address is in Sipjeong-dong, it serves Catholics in Bupyeong 3-dong and surrounding neighborhoods. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists the Holy Family as its patron, and the Sisters of Divine Providence share in parish apostolic service. Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and devotional life, the parish serves as a pastoral center where Catholics in this urban area sustain their faith in community.

The parish's dedication to the Holy Family naturally points toward living the faith within family and community. It is a place shaped by Catholics who formed a community in the Bupyeong and Sipjeong area through decades of industrialization and urban development, gathering to worship, learn, and build relationships. Its present significance lies less in being a special monument and more in the continuity of ordinary parish liturgy, pastoral care, and community life.

History & origins

The establishment of Bupyeong 3-dong Parish was closely connected with urban development and Catholic population growth in the Sinchon area during the 1970s. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that after military units withdrew and redevelopment proceeded, the number of Catholics increased rapidly. The Diocese of Incheon therefore divided parts of Sangok-dong, Bupyeong 2-dong, and Juwon parishes and erected Bupyeong 3-dong Parish on 16 February 1982.

The first pastor, Father Benedict Zweber, rented a two-story building in Sipjeong-dong to serve as a temporary church and office while preparing for a permanent church. Fundraising began in March of that year, and the pastor also sought support from overseas. On 14 November 1982, the parish purchased the present church site of about 826.5 pyeong, establishing the base for construction.

Construction continued for about three years. On 9 March 1985, the new church, equipped with eight catechetical rooms and two small halls, was dedicated. The Sisters of Divine Providence had been assigned to the parish from its early days and assisted in pastoral work, while the community strengthened catechesis and devotional activities alongside the building project.

The early history of Bupyeong 3-dong thus moves from rapid urban growth, to worship in a temporary building, to fundraising and the construction of a permanent church. It shows how an independent parish community took root in a rapidly changing part of Bupyeong.
