About this place

Bakchon-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gyeyang District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in and around Bakchon-dong in Gyeyang-gu. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists the Holy Spirit as its patron. Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, the parish functions as a local pastoral center for Catholics in the northeastern part of Gyeyang-gu.

The present church building was dedicated in 2025 and contains the principal worship space as well as rooms for catechesis, a choir loft, clergy residence, and other facilities needed for parish life. The new church reflects the community's effort to provide broader liturgical and educational space after many years of worship at the same site. It is best understood not simply as a newly constructed building, but as the living place of liturgy and fellowship for a parish under the patronage of the Holy Spirit.

History & origins

Bakchon-dong Parish was established on 5 December 2005 after being separated from Gyesan-dong Parish as the Catholic population of the Gyeyang area grew. Contemporary Catholic reporting noted that several new parishes were erected in the Diocese of Incheon on that date. Bakchon-dong began as an independent community serving Catholics in Bakchon-dong, Dongyang-dong, Bangchuk-dong, and Byeongbang-dong.

In 2006, the parish prepared a church at its present site and continued its life of worship there. As the community and its pastoral activities developed, the need for more adequate liturgical and educational space became clearer. Construction of a new church began in 2022, and Catholic reporting records that parishioners supported the project through pledged offerings, bazaars, food sales, and other fundraising efforts.

The project was completed in December 2024. On 12 October 2025, Bishop John Baptist Jung Shin-chul of Incheon presided over the dedication of the new church. The sequence from the formation of an independent parish, to the first church at the site, and finally to the new church shows how the community strengthened its pastoral foundations amid the changing population and Catholic presence of the Gyeyang area.
