About this place
Ara-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon serving the Ara-dong living area of Incheon’s Seo-gu and is listed in the official Korean Catholic directory as part of the Seo-gu pastoral district. As a relatively recent parish, it provides a local pastoral base for Catholics amid the expansion of Geomdan New Town and the formation of new residential neighborhoods.
In a newly developing urban area, residential movement and distance from older parishes can make a stable local parish community especially important. Ara-dong Parish gives Catholics a nearby place to continue sacramental, catechetical, and communal life and helps newly formed neighborhoods become connected as one community within the Diocese of Incheon.
History & origins
Ara-dong Parish was created in response to population growth and the formation of new neighborhoods in Geomdan New Town. The Diocese of Incheon established the parish on January 16, 2023, by separating part of Ara-dong from the territory of Wondang-dong Parish and assigning it to the new parish.
At the time of establishment, the community began in temporary premises before a permanent church setting had been secured. The Catholic Times reported that the new parish started with 225 households and 626 Catholics. This reflects the pastoral need to serve newly arriving Catholics locally as the new town developed.
The current official directory now records Ara-dong as a distinct parish in the Seo-gu pastoral district at its present location. The movement from a newly formed community in temporary premises toward an established local parish is itself the central narrative of Ara-dong Catholic Church’s short but clearly documented history.
