Imdong Cathedral is a cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju at 23 Taebong-ro, Buk-gu, Gwangju. The archdiocese’s current parish page records the parish as established on December 12, 1966, with St. Anselm as its patron.

Archdiocesan historical material states that in 1983 Imdong became the archdiocese’s second cathedral after Bukdong. St. Anselm was chosen as patron in memory of an American benefactor whose baptismal name was Anselm and who helped support the building of the church; the saint later also became closely associated with the patronal identity of the archdiocese.

Imdong Cathedral therefore serves both as a territorial parish and as a cathedral of the archdiocese, making it an important liturgical place in the history and identity of the Church in Gwangju.
