About this place
Hyojadong Parish of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, belongs to the Chuncheon District of the Diocese of Chuncheon and serves the Catholic community in the southern part of Chuncheon. Its patronal title is Mary, Queen of the Apostles. The parish was separated from Juklimdong Parish as Catholic communities in the city expanded, and today it continues to be a place for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life near the diocesan offices.
The church also retains a distinctive visual element that reflects the parish’s spiritual identity. The diocesan history records a mural on the front exterior wall depicting fishermen casting a net from a boat together with Jesus. The image evokes the apostolic call to gather people through the Gospel and can be read in connection with the parish’s patronal title, Queen of the Apostles. Hyojadong Catholic Church is thus both an urban parish created through the city’s growth and a place where architectural symbolism and community faith remain connected.
The parish title and the symbolism of the church are closely connected. The title “Queen of the Apostles” evokes Mary’s relationship to apostolic mission, while the fishermen and nets on the facade visually express the calling to proclaim the Gospel and gather people. These elements make Hyojadong Catholic Church a place where the parish community expresses its understanding of mission through the very space in which it worships.
History & origins
Hyojadong Parish was established by separating territory from Juklimdong Parish as Chuncheon expanded southward and the Catholic population increased. For Catholics living in areas such as Hyojadong, Seoksadong, and Toegyedong, Juklimdong Catholic Church was increasingly distant, while Juklimdong Parish itself was becoming crowded. The Diocese of Chuncheon describes Hyojadong as the third parish established within Chuncheon city, after Soyangro in 1950 and Ungyodong in 1966.
Bishop Thomas Park organized the new parish with a wide jurisdiction covering parts of Hyoja 1-dong, Hyoja 2-dong, Seoksadong, Toegyedong, and several surrounding rural districts, including areas then belonging to Chunseong-gun and Hongcheon-gun. At its establishment the parish had 1,926 Catholics and six mission stations: Goeun-ri, Sinnam, Joyang-ri, Gwangpan-ri, Gulji-ri, and Saesulmak. This shows that Hyojadong began as a broad pastoral center linking southern Chuncheon with neighboring rural Catholic communities.
Construction of the church took place within the diocesan property. Parishioners directly helped with foundational work, including gathering aggregate, while Bishop Thomas Park secured the needed construction funds. After completion, the church was dedicated on November 20, 1969, in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan and Bishop Thomas Park. The parish’s origin in urban growth, together with the direct participation of its Catholics in building the church, remains central to the history of the Hyojadong community.
The presence of six mission stations within the new parish shows that its original pastoral territory in southern Chuncheon was much broader than it is today. As the city grew and new parishes were later established, that territory was divided again. Hyojadong Parish therefore began as a wide regional parish serving both urban and rural Catholic communities, an important context for understanding why its historical boundaries differ from those of the present parish.
