Nungju Catholic Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in Neungju began much earlier than the present parish. According to a 2013 Archdiocese of Gwangju article on the dedication of the new church, Neungju began in 1958 as a mission station under Hwasun Parish. The community continued its Catholic life as a mission for several decades before being elevated to quasi-parish status in the autumn of 2010, marking a transition toward a more independent pastoral structure.

Neungju was elevated to a parish in January 2011. The current Archdiocese of Gwangju parish page gives January 20, 2011 as its establishment date. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea still lists September 9, 2010, but the archdiocesan historical article distinguishes the quasi-parish stage in 2010 from the parish elevation in 2011. This history therefore follows the sequence of those documented stages rather than forcing the two dates into a single event.

After becoming an independent parish, the community proceeded with construction of a new church. Work began in November 2012, the first Mass in the new building was celebrated in August 2013, and the dedication was held on October 19 of that year with the archbishop presiding. The project included not only the church itself but also an education building and a priest’s residence, providing the new parish with a fuller pastoral base.

The history of Neungju can therefore be traced from the mission community founded in 1958, through quasi-parish status in 2010 and parish status in 2011, to the dedication of a new church complex in 2013. Differences remain among sources concerning the exact early administrative date and patronage; the current patron follows the present archdiocesan record, while the older differing metadata is preserved as a source discrepancy rather than silently reconciled.
