History & origins

Hangdong Parish was established on February 1, 2023 as a new Catholic community took shape in the Hangdong area of southwestern Seoul. The Korean Catholic Directory records its establishment date and patron, Mary, Mother of God, and now classifies it as an independent parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 16th Guro District.

After the parish was established, the community continued the work of securing and building a church of its own. Posts on the parish’s official KakaoTalk channel document news from the church construction process, showing that the formation of the community and the building of its worship space progressed together in the parish’s early period.

The current directory lists 170 Yeondong-ro, Guro-gu, as the parish’s representative address. Although Hangdong’s history is still recent, the sequence from its 2023 establishment to the development of a permanent church community forms the central story of the place.
