About this place

Hagi-dong Parish belongs to the northern Daejeon district of the Diocese of Daejeon and serves as a center of Catholic life for the Hagi-dong area of Yuseong-gu, where the faithful continue Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists St. Francis of Assisi as the parish patron. The lot-number address “Hagi-dong 535-1” in the package and the current road address “49 Songnim-ro” are given together for the same place in the Diocese of Daejeon’s record of the church blessing, confirming the identity of the site. Visitors should therefore understand it as an independent territorial parish serving local Catholics, not as a religious-order facility or a chapel.

With St. Francis as patron, Hagi-dong Parish recalls a Christian life marked by evangelical simplicity and fraternity. Although it is a relatively young parish, the experience of parishioners taking part directly in prayer and fundraising for the construction of the church is closely tied to the community’s identity. The church today is both the ordinary pastoral home of Catholics in northern Yuseong and a house of faith that the community worked together to provide. The building includes the church, rectory, convent, and meeting spaces, making clear its role as a parish center where liturgy, pastoral ministry, and communal activities continue in one place.

History & origins

Hagi-dong Parish was created on January 10, 2006, when it was separated from Noeun-dong Parish. The new parish began with the task of providing an independent church of its own, and after purchasing land in January 2008 it moved into full preparation for construction. Because the building of a church became a central task almost from the beginning, the parish’s early history is closely connected with the process by which the faithful themselves created a stable place for liturgy and community life.

Common prayer and fundraising by parishioners played a major role in the project. According to the Diocese of Daejeon, from November 2008 through August 2009 the entire parish offered 200,000 decades of the Rosary and 6,000 weekday Masses for the construction of the church. The community also organized bazaars to raise building funds, combining prayer with concrete financial participation. The fact that the diocese highlighted these efforts in its record of the blessing shows that the new church was not simply an administratively provided facility but the result of sustained participation by the whole new parish.

The new church officially opened with a blessing Mass presided over by Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik on November 10, 2012. The Diocese of Daejeon described it as a reinforced-concrete building at 49 Songnim-ro in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, corresponding to Hagi-dong 535-1. It has one basement level and four floors above ground, with a total floor area of about 1,400 square meters, and includes the church, rectory, convent, meeting rooms, and other spaces required for parish liturgy, pastoral ministry, and community activities.

The roughly six-year sequence from separation from Noeun-dong Parish, through the purchase of land and the community’s prayer and fundraising, to the blessing of the new church forms the foundational history of Hagi-dong Parish. Because the Rosary, weekday Mass offerings, and bazaars are recorded alongside the construction itself, the history of this church points not only to the completion of a building but especially to the way parishioners worked together to create a home for their community.
