About this place

Gyori Catholic Church is a parish in the U-dong District of the Diocese of Busan, serving Catholics in Gyori and the surrounding area of Gijang-eup through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Catholic directory records St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron. In a part of Gijang where urban and rural-coastal ways of life meet, the parish provides a nearby place for Catholics to sustain their faith in everyday life.

Although it was formed as a separate pastoral community relatively recently, the parish stands in continuity with the older Catholic community of the Gijang area. The church functions as a community home where parishioners celebrate Sunday liturgy and the sacraments, learn the faith, and build relationships. Visitors can understand it as an independent parish for the northern part of Gijang-eup and a local church shaped by devotion to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus.

History & origins

Gyori Parish was established by separation from Gijang Parish in response to changes in the population and Catholic community of the Gijang area. Both the Catholic Times report and the Catholic directory give October 5, 2007 as the date of establishment. On that date the Diocese of Busan created both Gyori and Songjeong parishes, further dividing pastoral responsibility in the region.

At its establishment, Gyori Parish was given responsibility for areas centered on Gyori and Manhwa-ri in Gijang-eup and the wider Ilgwang area. This restructuring reduced the need for Catholics across the broad Gijang area to travel to the older parish and made liturgy, the sacraments, and catechesis more accessible within their own living area. Building an independent liturgical and community foundation for local Catholics became an early task of the new parish.

Gyori later became established as one of the parishes of the U-dong District. Its historical significance lies less in a single monumental building event than in the reorganization of pastoral structures to match local change. In that sense, the parish represents a diocesan process of allowing the faith inherited from Gijang Parish to continue within a newly defined local community.
