About this place
Seonwon-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Seonwon-dong, Yeosu, within the Yeosu district. The archdiocese records the parish as established on February 1, 1981, with Our Lady of Guadalupe as its patron.
The church is also closely connected with the history of the Missionaries of Guadalupe in Korea. According to an archdiocesan report, it was built to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the society's mission in Korea and in 2016 was designated by the Archdiocese of Gwangju as a memorial church of the Missionaries of Guadalupe.
Seonwon-dong is therefore both an active local parish serving Catholics in Yeosu and a place that preserves the memory of the missionary society that served the archdiocese from the 1960s onward. Present parish life and the historical memory of missionary service together shape the meaning of the site.
