The Missionary Sisters of St. Columban were founded on February 1, 1922 and entered Korea on February 19, 1955. Historical Catholic records show that Mokpo became an important early base, where sisters assigned to other regions spent time learning Korean and adapting to local life.
The place is therefore best understood not as an ordinary parish church, but as the Mokpo-area community of an international missionary congregation. The sisters' long history alongside the Korean Church in the difficult postwar period and their continuing religious life are central to the meaning of the site.
