About this place
The Gwangju community of the Missionary Society of St. Columban is a community of missionary priests in Mareuk-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju. Both the Catholic Church Directory in Korea and the Archdiocese of Gwangju confirm the current Gwangju community and Columban center at 152 Woram Singi-gil, the same address as the package.
The Missionary Society of St. Columban was founded on June 29, 1918 and entered Korea on October 29, 1933. The archdiocese explains that the first ten Columban priests sent to Korea in 1933 began ministry in places including Naju, Suncheon, and Gwangju, and that after the Apostolic Prefecture of Gwangju was established in 1937, early diocesan administration began in a Columban building in Sanjeong-dong, Mokpo.
The present Gwangju community is therefore not an ordinary parish church, but a base for missionary and specialized pastoral work. The society's long history alongside the Archdiocese of Gwangju from its formative years and its continuing social and pastoral ministries are central to understanding the place.
