About this place
The Hwasun monastery of St. Benedict's Waegwan Abbey is a Benedictine religious community in Chunyang-myeon, Hwasun County. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea and the Archdiocese of Gwangju identify it as the Hwasun monastery belonging to Waegwan Abbey, at the same 1385 Hakpo-ro address given in the package.
Catholic historical research records that Waegwan Abbey established the Hwasun monastery on November 1, 2006. The same address also houses the Hwasun St. Benedict Retreat House, so the site combines the common life and prayer of Benedictine monks with a spiritual ministry of retreats and Scripture reflection for the faithful.
This target therefore refers not to the mother abbey in Waegwan, North Gyeongsang Province, but to its Hwasun community within the Archdiocese of Gwangju. The combination of Benedictine monastic life and retreat ministry is central to the meaning of the place.
