About this place

Sari Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in Sari village, Heuksan-myeon, Sinan County, belonging to Heuksan Parish in the Archdiocese of Gwangju. Archdiocesan sources describe the rapid formation of several Catholic mission communities on Heuksando in the 1950s and record that the present Sari mission building was completed in December 1958.

Sari village is also known as the place where the scholar Jeong Yak-jeon lived in exile, taught local students, and completed Jasan Eobo, his study of marine life, in 1814. A visit to the mission therefore brings together the growth of the Catholic community on Heuksando with an important layer of the island's wider historical and cultural memory. The mission building is also described as a modern structure resembling Heuksan Catholic Church.

Today Sari Mission Station is an island faith community cared for by Heuksan Parish. Sources differ on the exact establishment date of the mission, giving 1957 and 1959, so this introduction avoids choosing one date and instead describes the community as having taken root in the late 1950s.
