About this place
Sageori Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Bugi-myeon, Jangseong County, within the Gwangju Gwangsan 1 district. The archdiocese records June 5, 1935 as the establishment date and names St. Francis Choe Kyong-hwan as its patron.
According to the archdiocese's eightieth-anniversary account, Catholic refugees from regions such as Gyeongsang and Chungcheong formed communities of believers in this area during the nineteenth-century persecutions. The parish was established in 1935 by missionaries of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, and its church building was later destroyed during the Korean War. This history helped make Sageori an important pastoral center linking long-standing Catholic villages and mission communities in Jangseong.
Today Sageori Catholic Church is both an active parish and a place that preserves the memory of Catholic villages formed during persecution. Its community under the patronage of St. Francis Choe Kyong-hwan, the history of nearby Catholic settlements, and the continuity of local pastoral life together shape the meaning of the place.
