About this place
Nohwa Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in Nohwa-eup, Wando County, within the southwestern district of the Archdiocese of Gwangju, and it belongs to Wando Parish. The archdiocese identifies Nohwado and Bogildo islands as its pastoral area. Its present identity is that of a local island community where Catholics can gather for prayer and remain connected with the pastoral life of their mother parish despite the separation created by the sea.
This is not an independent parish church with a resident priest, but an island mission station belonging to Wando Parish. Because travel to the parish center is constrained by island geography, its important role is to gather local Catholics and help maintain continuity in liturgical and community life. Visitors should not assume that it has the same regular schedule as an ordinary parish, but should check guidance from the mission station and the mother parish.
History & origins
The current Archdiocese of Gwangju record gives May 1, 1984 as the establishment date of Nohwa Mission Station. At the time, Nohwado and Bogildo were within the pastoral territory of Wando Parish, and island Catholics needed a local place where they could gather as a community while remaining connected with the parish across the sea.
The completion and blessing of the mission building are documented later that same year. The Catholic Times reported that Wando Parish completed and blessed the mission building on Nohwado on November 1, 1984. This does not necessarily conflict with the May establishment date recorded by the archdiocese; rather, it can be read as a later stage in which a physical place for worship and community gathering was completed and blessed after the mission community had been established.
At the time, the Catholic Times described the blessing of the Nohwado mission as the creation of an evangelizing foothold on a remote island. The verified chronology is brief, but the establishment of the mission and the blessing of its building in 1984 show how Catholics on Nohwa and Bogil were given a stable mission community connected with Wando Parish. Later changes in buildings or organization have not been added without further reliable official records.
