About this place
Nodae-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Nodae-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju, within the Gwangju South district. The archdiocese records the parish as established on October 16, 2007, with St. Francis of Assisi as its patron.
As a comparatively young parish founded in the 2000s, it provides an independent pastoral center for the Catholic community that developed in Nodae-dong and the surrounding residential area. Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish activities form the core of its present life. Its patronage under St. Francis of Assisi also connects the parish with a spiritual tradition of evangelical simplicity, peace, and fraternity.
Nodae-dong Catholic Church is therefore best understood not as an old historic site, but as a modern urban parish serving the everyday religious life of Catholics in the area. Its present liturgical and community life is the central meaning of the place.
History & origins
Nodae-dong Parish was established in 2007 after separating from Jinwol-dong Catholic Church. The current record of the Archdiocese of Gwangju gives October 16, 2007 as the official establishment date, while a Catholic Times report on the church dedication also confirms that the community began that year as a new parish separated from Jinwol-dong Parish.
After the parish was founded, it began the process of securing its own liturgical space. In May 2010, a blessing Mass was celebrated for a temporary church in the basement, providing the parish community with a place for worship. Plans later proceeded to expand the church in response to the needs of the parish.
Expansion work began in June 2015. The project provided a two-story church with seating for 360, together with a small hall, choir loft, and rectory. After completion, Archbishop Kim Hee-jung presided over the dedication of the new church on February 27, 2016.
The verified chronology of Nodae-dong Catholic Church therefore runs from the parish’s separation and establishment in 2007, through the temporary church prepared in 2010, to the expansion and dedication of 2015–2016. Its development from a temporary liturgical space to the present church within a relatively short period is the central thread of its documented building and community history.
