노안 성당
Parish
About this place
Noan Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Noan-myeon, Naju, within the Naju-Hampyeong district. The archdiocese records the parish as established in 1908 and names the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron. It is one of the earlier parishes in the Naju area and became an important center for the spread of Catholic life in the region.
The roots of Noan Catholic Church lie in the Gyeryang mission community of the late nineteenth century. Historical Catholic sources record that the growing community became a parish in 1908, and the present church building was erected in 1927. The Korea Heritage Service describes the building as a representative modern Catholic church in the Naju area and notes that a 1957 extension gave it its present Latin-cross plan.
The church building was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage in 2002. Noan Catholic Church is therefore both a living parish where Mass and the sacraments continue today and a place preserving the early history of Catholicism in Naju together with an important example of modern church architecture.
