About this place
Namdong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Namdong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, within the Gwangju East district. The archdiocese currently identifies St. Ottilia as the parish patron and presents the church both as an ordinary parish and as the “Namdong May 18 Memorial Church.” Its present identity therefore brings together its role as a parish where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and share community life, and its role in carrying the memory of May 18 within the prayer and liturgical life of the archdiocese.
This is not a static monument devoted only to a past event, but a church in which parish life continues today. Visitors can understand it from two connected perspectives: as a local parish under the patronage of St. Ottilia and as a place where the experiences remembered by the Catholic community in Gwangju’s modern history continue to be held within liturgical memory.
