About this place
Namak Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Samhyang-eup, Muan County, within the Mokpo-Muan district. The archdiocese records the parish as established on September 9, 2010, with the Holy Family as its patron. It serves as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
As a comparatively recent parish founded in the 2010s, its identity is less connected with an old pilgrimage tradition or historic monument and more with the pastoral needs of a newer residential community. Its patronage under the Holy Family also gives the parish a clear spiritual reference point for Christian family and community life.
Namak Catholic Church is therefore best understood as an ordinary local parish serving the Catholic faithful of the area. Its meaning lies primarily in its present role as a place where the community gathers for worship and shared parish life.
History & origins
Namak Parish was established on September 9, 2010, after separating from Okam-dong Parish, and the Holy Family was chosen as its patron. The current parish record of the Archdiocese of Gwangju and a Catholic Times report on the church dedication both confirm this establishment date and patronage.
After the parish was founded, the process of securing permanent parish facilities proceeded in stages. An education building and rectory were constructed and blessed in March 2014. From November 2018, the parish began special pledged Mass offerings to raise funds for a new church, and in April 2019 it formed a new-church construction committee to begin preparations in earnest.
Construction began in April 2020 and the new church was completed. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on January 31, 2021, and approval for use was received on February 9. On May 29 of the same year, Archbishop Kim Hee-jung presided over the dedication of the new church.
This chronology shows how Namak Parish first began as an independent parish in 2010, then established educational and pastoral facilities, and over roughly a decade developed the present church building. The distinction between the establishment of the parish and the later construction of its permanent church is central to understanding its history.
