About this place

Mongtan Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Mongtan-myeon, Muan County, within the Mokpo-Muan district. The archdiocese records May 27, 1899 as its establishment date and names St. John Nam Jong-sam as its patron.

Catholic history in the Mongtan area is connected with the late nineteenth-century Ujeokdong parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Fr. Augustine Yi Nae-su was assigned to Ujeokdong in Muan in 1899 and that the local Catholic community continued through later changes between parish and mission-station status. After Illo Parish was established in 1958, the community was maintained as the Mongtan mission station.

The present Mongtan Catholic Church therefore stands within a long continuity of Catholic life in the area. The archdiocese's current use of 1899 as the establishment date is treated here as reflecting that older Ujeokdong tradition, and the introduction emphasizes this continuity.
