About this place
The Gwangju Unnam-dong Bethany Community of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary is a women's religious community in Unnam-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirms the address at 52 Mongnyeon-ro 273beon-gil as the “Gwangju Unnam-dong Bethany Community” and gives the English name Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. The address is the same as that of Unnam-dong Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary as founded on January 6, 1877 and as entering Korea on June 26, 1958. The Bethany Community is a local community of the institute in Gwangju, where religious community life and prayer continue at the same location as the parish church.
This place is therefore not an independent parish church, but a religious community located at Unnam-dong Catholic Church. It is distinct from the congregation's Holy Trinity Community in Yeonggwang, and the official subsidiary name “Unnam-dong Bethany Community” is central to identifying the place correctly.
