The Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirms the address at 229 Yangeul-ro and gives the English name Society of Mary (Marianists). The current Archdiocese of Gwangju directory also lists the Society of Mary at the same address.
The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the Society of Mary as founded on October 2, 1817 and as entering Korea on September 20, 1960. Mokpo Marianist High School is located at the same address, giving the site a distinctive setting in which religious community life stands close to an educational environment.
This place is therefore best understood not as a territorial parish church, but as a religious community where Marianist men live and pray together. The long-standing Marianist presence in Mokpo and the neighboring educational setting form an important background for understanding the site.
