About this place
Hyeonae Mission Station is a Catholic mission community at 45 Yuhyeon 1-gil, Noan-myeon, Naju, belonging to Geumam Parish in the Archdiocese of Gwangju. The archdiocese records it as established on March 7, 1953 and serving the Yugok-ri area of Noan-myeon.
Historical research on early Catholic mission work in the Gwangju region identifies Hyeonae as one of the mission communities connected with settlements of people affected by Hansen’s disease. Its history is therefore tied not only to local worship, but also to a community that sustained faith amid illness and social exclusion.
Today Hyeonae remains a local faith community belonging to Geumam Parish and preserves the memory of Catholic community life that has continued since 1953.
