About this place
Hwasun Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju at 88 Jingak-ro, Hwasun-eup, Hwasun County, within the Gwangju East district. Both the archdiocese and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia record the parish as established on May 31, 1958, with St. Martin as its patron.
The Catholic community in Hwasun began to take formal shape in 1956 when Namdong Parish established a mission station in Hwasun-eup. As the community grew, land was acquired and a wooden church was built in 1957; the mission station was then elevated to parish status in 1958. The parish subsequently became a center for evangelization and the development of mission communities in surrounding areas.
Hwasun Catholic Church is therefore a parish under the patronage of St. Martin, distinguished by its growth from a 1950s mission community into a pastoral center for the wider Hwasun area.
